Przewalski horses in a birch forest

Hustai Nuruu National Park is located about an hour from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Przewalski horses went extinct in the wild in the 1970s, and the only remaining members of the species were in zoos. In the 1990s, some Dutch zoos took a few horses and released them at this park. Eventually they gave the project over to the Mongolian Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment, and MACNE runs the project to this day. Volunteers stay at the camp with tourists and perform research on the horses.
