What type of Volunteering are you seeking at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary?[]

At Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, we love our Volunteers. In fact, we couldn’t care for our animals and our guests without their fabulous support. Are you interested in joining these teams of helpful, dedicated superstars for 2010? Our animals in the Sanctuary and Wildlife Hospital require care and attention seven days a week, 364 days a year, so Volunteers for all shifts on all days are always in demand.

There are three main strands of volunteering within the Sanctuary: Volunteering in our Wildlife Hospital, Volunteering in our Wildlife Animal section or Volunteering with Park Guest Services, to provide information about our animals and attractions to our guests. Each of these strands has a separate application process, so have a read about the typical activities below and see which strand interests you the most. We’d love to welcome you into one of our Volunteering teams.

Become a Wildlife Hospital Volunteer[]

Volunteers are the backbone of providing quality care to our animals at Currumbin Wildlife Community Wildlife Hospital. Being a Volunteer within in the Wildlife Hospital is a fantastic role which will provide a great sense of satisfaction. You will be a direct part of the process in providing care to our injured wildlife. In addition you will have the opportunity to work within a brand new veterinary facility which treats an amazing diversity of animals; from Crocs to Raptors, alongside a professional veterinary team.

Wildlife Hospital Job descriptions:

a) Reception Volunteers[]


This position involves staffing the Reception area of the new Currumbin Wildlife Hospital. You will need to be comfortable greeting people who are delivering injured animals and assisting the Vet Nurses to admit and care for the animals. The role also involves basic clerical duties such as answering phone calls, providing information to animal donors, filing and data recording, dispatching pathology samples and assisting with contacting Animal Carers. Minor cleaning and housekeeping task will be required as part of keeping Reception clean and tidy.


b) Hospital Volunteers

This position involves assisting the Veterinary Nursing staff of the new Currumbin Wildlife Hospital. The key duties of the role include assisting with providing a clean and caring environment for injured Australian Wildlife and for animals from Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary requiring veterinary care. The role also involves feeding animals and birds, cleaning cages, assisting with animal medication, medical procedures and observations. Performing essential basic care duties such as washing linen, tidying and restocking supplies are a key part of this role.
Pre-requisites for this role
• You must have access to email and the internet, as this is our mode of communicating with our Volunteers.
• You must be aged over 18 years.
• You should have a general knowledge of Australian Wildlife and Birdlife, and an interest in animal welfare.
• You must be mentally prepared to care for injured and distressed animals.
• You must be physically capable of lifting a small animal of up to 10 kg.
• Courteous and friendly people with a good sense of initiative and office admin skills are strongly encouraged to apply.

The application process We have partnered with the not for profit service VOLUNTEERING GOLD COAST INC. to assist us with the recruitment of our Wildlife Hospital Volunteers. The application process is simple:

2. Phone VGC on 07 5526 2811 and advise that you are interested in applying for a position with the Currumbin Sanctuary Community Wildlife Hospital. They will make an appointment for an interview for you to come in and discuss your interest and suitability for the role.

3. VGC will then liaise with the Wildlife Hospital and you will be asked to come in for a trial shift before being offered a permanent roster.

Volunteering can be the start of a career path, or just a way to be part of a great organization which aims to educate people about Australian native flora and fauna and how to conserve them.

Wildlife Volunteers job description:[]

The committed team of Wildlife Volunteers at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary dedicates their time to caring for the wildlife within the Sanctuary. This role involves working with a keeper on their rounds, and assisting with the care of animals in the Sanctuary collection and the Presentations Department (which educates the public about wildlife and their conservation).
The current rounds that volunteers can work on include Mammal rounds, Bird rounds, Reptile rounds (one in the Green Cauldron arena), Presentations, Koala photos and maintenance crew.

The core daily tasks of the Wildlife Volunteers involve: undertaking food preparation, participating in feeding the animals, cleaning and assisting with refurbishing animal enclosures assisting the keepers on their rounds. The range of animals and birds is extensive, and includes a huge variety of Australian native animals: wombats, koalas, kangaroos, Tasmanian devils, water birds, raptors, parrots, parrots, reptiles, frogs, stick insects!............and many more amazing creatures. Become a Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary PARK VOLUNTEER[]

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary's Park Volunteers are an integral part of our daily operation. Park Volunteers are involved with greeting visitors, answering visitors' questions about our animals and attractions, helping visitors to locate shows and facilities, assisting with disabled and VIP groups and helping visitors to get the maximum enjoyment out of their day at the Sanctuary. There is also a level of involvement with the Sanctuary animals; from monitoring the Kangaroos in the Kangaroo encounter enclosure, to helping out in the Lorikeet feeding arena to helping staff with Koala photos to assisting with Eel and Pelican feeding.

PARK VOLUNTEER job description:[]

This is a fun and friendly role. If you love meeting and greeting visitors, and you enjoy being the person to ‘make someone’s day’, then this is a terrific role for you. But be warned, you will need to have sturdy shoes, as walking around the park to answer visitor enquiries is a major part of the role. You will need to be confident in providing suggestions to visitors on how to maximize their enjoyment at the Sanctuary, be willing to help our guests locate shows and facilities, assist disabled guests and provide information to VIP groups. Other key duties include maintaining crowd control during shows and photo sessions and taking pride in showcasing our wonderful Sanctuary in a variety of different roles.


Our Park Volunteers need to be lively and energetic people. You should be prepared to be on your feet during your weekly shift (which is for 4.75 hours from 7.45am to 12.30 or from 12.15 to 5.00 pm) as extensive walking is required. Please also consider if you meet the remaining selection criteria: no allergies to birds or dust, able to perform raking, be comfortable working with animals, be available to attend the training course which is held on Wednesdays over a 4 week period, able to offer a long term commitment to volunteering at the Sanctuary ( 12 months is desirable). We are also very keen to offer places to Volunteers who are available to work on weekends or during school holidays as these are our busiest times.

If you meet the selection criteria for the role, VGC will then liaise with the Park Volunteers department and you will be asked to come in to attend an information morning where you will be given more information about the role. At this meeting we will also outline all the other benefits of Volunteering at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, answer any questions you may have and give you a chance to see the job first hand.

Training requirements[]

We hold 3 or 4 Park Volunteer intakes each year. We require that all volunteers participate in the Park Volunteer training course. The training course is designed to provide you with extensive information about Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, knowledge about our animals and facilities, allowing new Volunteers to confidently assist guests with many of their needs. The training course also requires the submission of written assessment pieces and the completion of an exam at the end of the course. As part of the training course, new Park Volunteers are required to complete a minimum number of shifts each week for four weeks under the supervision of a Duty Volunteer. A non-refundable fee of $60 is payable to cover the cost of supplying a uniform, name badge, hat and training and reference materials.
Please note that the role of Park Volunteer is most suited to people over 26 years as typically people in this age bracket are able to commit to the twelve month commitment we are seeking.
